Ten Morning Habits to Build Your Day Upon From Alternative Health Solutions of NJ

I believe the morning is the foundation upon which I build my entire day – mentally, physically, and spiritually. I find that if I start the day by doing the habits listed in this article, I am usually happier, healthier, and more productive throughout the day. On the other hand, if my morning is chaotic and rushed I find that my energy runs out later in the day and I generally get a lot less done. Here are ten morning habits I believe will provide you with a solid foundation upon which to go about your entire day:

1. Wake Earlier
It seems there are endless articles online espousing the benefits of waking earlier. But when you think about it, this really is the key to overhauling your morning routine. With more time, you are free to develop the habits listed in this article and actually enjoy the morning free from the pressure of having to rush out the door.

2. Have a ‘”Holy Hour”

One of my favorite personal development coaches advocates taking a “Holy Hour” each morning. Basically this is an hour you devote to working on yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually. If you do this, instead of turning on the computer soon after you wake up (as I know many people do in this modern age), you will set yourself up for a great day. – I need to improve on this one making turning on my computer step 11.

3. Meditate

Meditation is the practice of silencing the mind, and the morning is a particularly good time to do it. Just a few of its many benefits include improved concentration, better health, and increased knowledge of self.

4. Visualize the Day Ahead

A simple, yet extremely powerful, exercise to practice in the morning is to shut your eyes and visualize how you want the day to unfold. This will give you direction as you go about your day and help you to avoid getting distracted with “urgent” but unimportant tasks.

5. Read and/ or Listen to Motivational Material

This may sound cheesy, but one of the reasons I love the morning is that an entire day of endless possibilities lies ahead. One of the best ways to ignite this spirit of endless possibilities is to devour some motivational material, whether it is in the form of a book, audio book or podcast.

6. Think the Impossible

Since we are on the subject of endless possibilities, why not try an exercise that is inspired by the White Queen in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland:

“Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “one can’t believe impossible things.”
“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Allowing your mind to let go of the rational and, instead, to explore the world of the “impossible” is a great way to get your creative juices flowing. And Aristotle did once say that the mark of an educated or mature mind is that it’s able to “entertain a thought without accepting it.”

7. Eat a Nutritious Breakfast

A nutritious and balanced breakfast is essential if you want to fire up your metabolism and keep yourself powered up throughout your day.
“Simple carbs release sugar in the body at a faster rate than complex carbs, fats, and protein, and give the body an immediate “up” feeling. But it is short-lived, and if you are in the habit of a high carb breakfast you are constantly fighting a battle for energy during the day.”
So forget the carbs and instead eat whole-grain cereal, eggs, fresh fruit or a even a health shake for breakfast.

8. Exercise

There are immense benefits to exercising in the morning. First, it raises your metabolism which helps to burn calories all day. Second, it starts the day with a positive accomplishment. I always feel ready to take on anything after exercising, and it is great to carry this momentum into the day.

9. Sharpen Your Brain

Exercising your brain is as important (if not more!) than exercising your muscles. Some fun activities to keep your mind sharp include Sudoku, Kakuro (my personal favorite), crosswords, quizzes, and brain teasers. – Does posting a well written blog count?

10. Take Time to Look Good

It’s a fact of life that people judge us by our appearance. For this reason, it’s a good idea to spend a few extra minutes in the morning to ensure you go out into the world looking the best you can. In fact, a recent study by two economists found “extra time spent grooming has a positive and significant effect on both men’s and women’s earnings”. This was found to be especially true for men, where “10 minutes daily grooming increases their weekly wages by 6 percent”.

Watermelon Pop Star

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
Watermelon
Popsicle sticks
Star-shaped cookie cutter

1. Use a cookie cutter to cut juicy star shapes from 1-inch-thick slices of seedless watermelon.

2. Insert a Popsicle stick into each star, then set the pops on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet.

3. Cover the stars with another sheet of foil and freeze for 1 hour or until firm.

Providing healthy doses of vitamins C, A, B6 and B1, watermelon is a low-calorie, antioxidant-rich treat. It is particularly healthy for men: it is a good source of the carotenoid lycopene, which has been shown to help reduce the risk of prostate and other cancers. Try spicing it up and add some black or crushed red pepper to sliced watermelon.

Curcumin in Turmeric

A new study reveals that curcumin, a compound in the spice turmeric, has a remarkable potential to limit the growth of fatty tissue. Research by the Vascular Biology Laboratory at Tufts University in Boston, Mass., examined the fat tissue deposition in mice fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. They discovered that adding curcumin limited the deposition of new fat in the tissues by inhibiting blood vessel formation (fatty tissue, like all animal tissue, needs adequate circulation to supply it with blood-borne nutrients). The conclusion; “Our findings suggest that dietary curcumin may have a potential benefit in preventing obesity.” The study was published in the May, 2009 issue of The Journal of Nutrition.

As is so often the case, natural, unprocessed foods such as turmeric are valuable in many ways. The fact that turmeric, an essential component of curry, seems to be responsible at least in part for the low rate of Alzheimer’s disease among elderly citizens of India is now well established. Its ability to inhibit fatty tissue formation is yet another bonus, on top of other reasons to eat turmeric that have already been discovered. Turmeric is a part of many anti-inflammatory eating plans, and a valuable addition to any diet.

Reiki In Hospitals

Excerpts from the article “Reiki in Hospitals” by William Lee Rand.

At hospitals and clinics across America, Reiki is beginning to gain acceptance as a meaningful and cost-effective way to improve patient care. "Reiki sessions cause patients to heal faster with less pain," says Marilyn Vega, RN, a private-duty nurse at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York. [Reiki] accelerates recovery from surgery, improves mental attitude and reduces the negative effects of medication and other medical procedures.

Julie Motz, a Reiki trained healer has worked with Dr. Mehmet Oz, a noted cardiothoracic surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. Motz uses Reiki and other subtle energy techniques to balance the patients’ energy during operations. She has assisted Dr. Oz in the operating room during open heart surgeries and heart transplants. Motz reports that none of the 11 heart patients so treated experienced the usual postoperative depression, the bypass patients had no postoperative pain or leg weakness; and the transplant patients experienced no organ rejection.

Marin General Hospital in Marin County, California is just north of San Francisco. There Motz has used subtle energy healing techniques with patients in the operating room.

The Tucson Medical Center's Reiki Clinic

The Reiki Clinic at the Tucson Medical Center (TMC) in Arizona has a team of Reiki practitioners who give Reiki to patients in their rooms. The program is administered by Sally Soderlund, RN, who is the Support Services Coordinator for Oncology. Arlene Siegel, who has been with the program from the beginning, runs the monthly support meetings for the Reiki volunteers.

Siegel believes that each patient requires a unique response. Most of the patients are very sick, some are dying, but they all respond to their conditions differently. Conditions treated at the Reiki Clinic include cancer, pain, chronic conditions, and postoperative surgery (they also deal with childbirth).

Reiki at Portsmouth Regional Hospital

Patricia Alandydy is an RN and a Reiki Master. She is the Assistant Director of Surgical Services at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

If patients request it, Reiki is then incorporated into their admission the morning of surgery, and an additional 15-20 minute session is given prior to their transport to the operating room. Some Reiki has also been done in the operating room at Portsmouth Regional.

Alandydy, with her partner Greda Cocco, also manage a hospital-supported Reiki clinic through their business called Seacoast Complementary Care, Inc.

The clinic treats a wide range of conditions including HIV, pain, and side-effects from chemotherapy and radiation. Some patients are referred by hospital physicians and some come by word of mouth from the local community.

The University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Mary Lee Radka is a Reiki Master and an R.N. who has the job classification of Nurse-Healer because of her Reiki skills. She teaches Reiki classes to nurses and other hospital staff at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. She also uses Reiki with most of her patients. She has found Reiki to produce the best results in reducing pain and stress, improving circulation and eliminating nerve blocks

In her book Reiki and Medicine she includes descriptions of using Reiki to treat trauma, heart attack, respiratory problems, CPR, child abuse, allergic reactions and other emergency-room situations. Dr. Eos now maintains a family practice at Grass Lake Medical Center and is an admitting-room physician at Foote Hospital in Jackson, Michigan, where she continues to use Reiki in conjunction with standard medical procedures.

The California Pacific Medical Center's Reiki Program

The California Pacific Medical Center is one of the largest hospitals in northern California. Its Health and Healing Clinic, a branch of the Institute for Health and Healing, provides care for both acute and chronic illness using a wide range of complementary care including Reiki, Chinese medicine, hypnosis, biofeedback, acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal therapy, nutritional therapy and aromatherapy.

Dr. Cantwell states: "I have found Reiki to be useful in the treatment of acute illnesses such as musculoskeletal injury/pain, headache, acute infections, and asthma. Reiki is also useful for patients with chronic illnesses, especially those associated with chronic pain."

Chiropractic Care May Ease ADHD

Chiropractic Care May Ease ADHD, Ear Problems
By Dr. wrieden
An article in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research points to a case study involving a 4-year old boy diagnosed by his pediatrician with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He was dropped by his day care center because of the disruptive effects of his ADHD. The child had a history of ear infections, coughing, poor appetite, and abnormal sleep patterns, and had been also diagnosed with asthma at age 2 and put on a nebulizer.
The child's mother brought him to a chiropractor for evaluation. The examining chiropractor, using a non-intrusive instrument known as an Insight Subluxation Station, conducted thermal and sEMG scans of the child's spine and found the existence of a subluxation in the child's cervical area.
"A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function," said Dr. Wrieden, a local chiropractor whose patients include a great many children. "Many chiropractors, including myself, have this technology that allows them to conduct thermal and Surface Electromyography (sEMG) tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist."
The patient underwent chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments, with frequency of care initially set at three times per week for two and a half months.
The child was a difficult subject because of his hyperactivity, but when promised rewards by the parents for his cooperation; he became more amenable to the care program.
Twelve days into the treatment program, the mother reported the child's eating habits had improved. The child was reevaluated at the 13th visit, at which point the mother said her son's appetite was back to normal. She also said his sleep patterns had improved and he was much less hyperactive. He was able to stop all medication and his school work also showed a better ability to focus and perform assigned tasks.

Shiatsu for Wellness

Shiatsu for Wellness

Shiatsu, a form of Oriental therapy based upon traditional Chinese medicine principles, promotes health and strengthens the body’s healing abilities. Shiatsu works to improve overall health by affecting the internal energy system. Therapy results in increased vitality, energy and stamina. Shiatsu is beneficial in the treatment of several health conditions including: Poor posture, joint problems, sprains, arthritis, sciatica, acute and chronic neck and back pain, sinusitis, and bronchitis. Shiatsu therapy releases toxins and muscle tension, stimulates the immune system and allows the individual to de-stress. Some of the immediate physical benefits of Shiatsu are regulation of the automatic nervous system activity and stimulation of the circulatory, lymphatic and hormonal systems. Techniques are similar to those found in other therapies such as osteopathy, lymphatic drainage, acupressure, and physiotherapy. However, Shiatsu practitioners define physical health conditions and diseases as due to blockages and imbalances in the qi flow throughout the body, which differentiates its diagnosis and treatment from several other massage therapy modalities. Shiatsu is sometimes referred to as Japanese physiotherapy. Shiatsu combines assisted-stretching techniques and acupressure to restore qi energy balance in the body. Shiatsu also assists the individual in balancing the root causes of underlying health conditions while accounting for psychological and physical functioning. Somewhat similar to acupuncture in its focus on the meridians and acupoints, Shiatsu therapy treats certain points on the body but without the use of needles. Regular treatments can increase range of motion and improve coordination and mobility. Has anybody used a chiropractor on a bulging disk? Did it help?

Recent Instant Message Question:

Has anybody used a chiropractor on a bulging disk? Did it help? I am nervous about the experience.

Recently a new client also having two discs prolapsed with complaints of a bad back and sciatica began seeing a Chiropractor once a week and she has reported it has “helped me a lot”. Once you have a disc injury, your back can react by altering its posture to compensate for the imbalances and also go into muscle spasm. This is nature's way of keeping the spine straight and stabilizing the disc, but it also increases your pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic adjustments help keeps your spine in correct alignment. This in turn means that the disc is more likely to retract into its proper position and have less pressure on it thus be less prone to bulge or herniate. Adjustments are also very effective at easing the muscle spasm associated with disc injuries.

A Chiropractor may do x-rays on your spine. If you have had an MRI scan done, you should get a copy on disc or report from the hospital and give it to your Chiropractor to read. Make them aware that you are nervous and they will start off with gentle adjustments to allow you to get used to it. They can also do a more gentle technique of adjusting with an "Activator". This is something that they just put on your back and press. It looks like a pen, and just gives a gentle shock like feeling. It helps the body to heal. I can tell you that many people with disc injuries go for chiropractic treatment. There are risks associated with any form of manipulation but these risks are extremely unlikely.

Be extremely careful about any surgery, many surgeries have been reported as unsuccessful for the type of complaints already discussed and scar tissue from a procedure can actually cause more hindrance then help long term. Be realistic though. You have a back injury. This will always be an area of weakness for you and no one, no chiropractor, medical doctor, osteopath or any other therapist will "cure" you straight away. You must take care of your spine and do as much with it as you can, but always listen to pain.

With regards to the disclaimer you asked about - it won’t be nearly as big or frightening as one that an orthopedic surgeon will hand over before an operation! Everyone has these now; it’s the day and age where people get sued left right and center. So every alternative medical practitioner will play it safe. I would say go for it with the Chiropractor, good luck, and try not to worry - that won’t help you heal either!

Discover Myofascial Release Therapy as a New Alternative Treatment!

Are You Searching for Relief from Chronic Pain?
Discover Myofascial Release Therapy as a New Alternative Treatment!

Myofascial Release Therapy alleviates the chronic pain & symptoms associated with( to name just a very few conditions): Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, Back Pain, Neck Pain & Knee Pain. (The list goes on.....)

It is considered a gentle therapy involving manipulation of fascia to relieve the restrictions & imbalances in your body. Impressive results are experienced with Myofascial Release Therapy & these results can be achieved in just a short period of time! Join the growing number of people suffering from similar ailments as you have! See what the client below had to say about Myofascial Release. This therapy presents new hope in treating your condition.

Myofascial Release Therapy uses a manipulation of the entire body to promote healing, decrease pain and recurrences of acute episodes caused by chronic stresses. This therapy also improves posture and increases circulation, mobility, flexibility and mind/body awareness. Myofascial Release Therapy is a relatively new, popular treatment and is gaining notice among mainstream doctors. Studies have found that people utilizing the treatment require less painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs which could have dangerous side effects and cost a great deal of money. If you are considering surgery, we urge you to call us before you make that serious decision! You may not need to have surgery!

Sources of pain often go undiagnosed because standard tests such as x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, MRIs and so forth, are unable to show fascial restrictions. By detecting the fascial restrictions during Myofascial Release Therapy, through touch, observation and outward symptoms, a three-dimensional approach of sustained pressure and movement within the fascial system can be performed to release restrictions and restore equilibrium.

This therapy is an art form and therapists performing Myofascial Release actually can feel the body respond to treatment and ease the restrictions that they feel. Oftentimes the body will indicate another point to start to treat that is an underlying cause of restriction and thus, pain. Pain is actually a symptom. You do not want to only treat a symptom, as so many times you may have experienced in the past by taking medicines, and to treat the cause of that pain. The cause of the pain many times is a restriction and Myofascial Release Therapy will remove those restrictions so that the body no longer signals for help by emitting pain messages!
