Your Baby'sTransition from Breast Milk to Organic Milk

When you come to introducing cow's milk into your baby's diet you may find that your baby is willing to switch from breast or formula straight away. However, many parents find it easiest to introduce cow's milk gradually. You could try giving your baby a cup of milk after dinner and still continue with bottled formula or breast milk, gradually reducing the number of bottle feeds and increasing the number of cow's milk feeds until you have switched over completely - some parents find the transition to cow's milk a good time to wean baby off of bottle and onto lidded beakers or cups instead.

To ease your baby onto cow's milk you could try mixing it with their regular breast or formula milk in varying amounts to get them used to the taste. Start with mostly breast or formula milk in the feed and add a tiny bit of cow's milk, then gradually increase the proportion of the cow's milk with each feed until you have completely switched over. If your baby really isn't keen on cow's milk you could try introducing it on their cereal or in smoothies first.

Meeting the minimum requirements daily can be a challenge if your child doesn't care for milk. While chocolate milk does add sugar to your child's diet, it has the same amount of calcium and other important vitamins and minerals as plain milk. Better yet, try a powdered flavoring — just a small amount will provide less sugar than preflavored milks. Some varieties (like Ovaltine) contain added vitamins and minerals, too.

Keep in mind that there are many ways to sneak milk into your child's diet. Serve him puddings, custards, and shakes for snacks. Make his soup with milk rather than water, and add a milk-based sauce or gravy to casseroles.
You can supplement this with other calcium rich foods such as cheese and yogurt as dairy products are also an essential source of other essential nutrients such as vitamins A and D and several important B vitamins. If your baby won't drink milk you should make sure they get at least two portions of calcium rich foods a day as part of a balanced diet.
Some plant foods, like dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, blackstrap molasses, and Brussels sprouts, contain calcium. So do pinto beans, figs, tofu made with calcium, and calcium-fortified fruit juice. These foods don't provide all of the vitamins found in milk, though. They contain no vitamin D, for example, so if your child doesn't drink milk, you'll want to make sure he takes a vitamin or multivitamin that contains 100 percent of the vitamin D he needs. Also keep in mind that these are not easy substitutions — it takes 4 cups of broccoli to provide the same amount of calcium as 1 cup of milk, for instance.

Some cereals are fortified with vitamin D. Check the labels.

Soy milk can substitute for cow's milk, but check the labels look for soy milk that is fortified with vitamin D, vitamin A, and calcium. The amount of calcium and other nutrients can vary, so look for brands that have the greatest nutritional value.

Yogurt is a great food for those who shun milk or are lactose intolerant. It has the same amount of protein and calcium as milk, but contains much less lactose, so most people who are lactose intolerant can tolerate yogurt. (Note that being lactose intolerant and allergic to milk protein is not the same thing.) Yogurt also contains a bacterium that’s healthy for the intestines.
Re- cap:

• If your child turns up his nose at milk, try mixing it with breast milk or formula (whichever he's used to), and gradually shift the ratio until you’re using all cow's milk.
• If your child isn't a big fan of milk, offer whole milk flavored with vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, or a flavoring perferred. Despite the additional sugar and calories, flavored milk is better than no milk, says the AAP's Dr. Greer, and you can adjust by watching calories elsewhere in your child’s diet.
• Your 12- to 24-month-old needs two cups of milk per day for adequate calcium, vitamin D, fat, and other nutrients, yet too much of it can interfere with iron absorption. Experts vary in opinion on the limit; some set the bar at 16 to 24 ounces per day, others at 24 to 36 ounces.
• If you choose organic milk, look for the USDA green and white organic seal that certifies it has been produced and handled using renewable resources, and without conventional pesticides, certain fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones, genetic engineering, or irradiation.
• Yogurt yogurt yogurt!

Smoothies for your baby are nutritious and delicious. They are perfect for fussy children who don’t like milk. Making baby smoothies is great for soothing sore gums from teething and are just plain fun.

Improving Your Health This Coming Year in 2010

It is almost the beginning of a new year and, once again, a time to reflect on what changes we can make to improve our lives. If you are intent on improving your health this year, acupuncture may be the very thing you need to "stick" to those resolutions. Here's how:

Resolution: Stay Sharp

Your New Year’s resolution may be to learn something new or take a class at the local college. How ever you choose to exercise your brain, acupuncture can help. Numerous studies suggest that acupuncture can help improve memory, mental clarity, concentration and cognitive function.

One recently published study showed how acupuncture can be used to help patients with vascular dementia. Cerebral functional imaging before and after acupuncture treatments showed a significant increase in the cerebral glucose metabolism of the brain which is associated with improved cognitive function. Other studies have looked at how acupuncture affects the performance of student taking an exam, Alzheimer's disease and memory impairment induced by diabetes and cerebral ischemia. All results, thus far, have been positive.

Resolution: Relieve Pain Naturally

Increasingly, people are looking for more natural approaches to help relieve painful conditions instead of relying on medications. Acupuncture has little to no side effects and can be helpful for all types of pain, regardless of what is causing the pain or where the pain is located. Some studies have shown the pain relief it provides can last for months.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain before and after acupuncture treatment for pain shows dramatic decreases in brain activity -- up to 70%. This decrease in brain activity in certain areas of the brain is thought to be the reason for the reduction of pain caused by the acupuncture treatments.

In addition to reducing pain, acupuncture also hastens the healing process by increasing circulation and attracting white blood cells to an injured area.

Resolution: Eliminate Stress

Stress reduction is always on the top ten list for New Year’s resolutions and for a good reason. Stress is often the cause of illness and the deterioration of health. Numerous studies have demonstrated the substantial benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of stress, anxiety and lowering blood pressure

In addition to acupuncture, Oriental medicine offers a whole gamut of tools and techniques that can be integrated into your life to keep stress in check. These tools include Theraputic Massage, Qi Gong exercises, dietary therapy, meditations and acupressure. Some of these modalities you can administer at home.

Needless to say, if the stress in your life is throwing you off balance, consider coming in for a treatment to regain peace of mind and stay healthy.

Resolution: Reach Target Weight and Stay There

Losing weight is the #1 most common New Year's Resolution. Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can help you reach your goal weight and maintain it by promoting better digestion, smoothing emotions, reducing appetite, improving metabolism, and eliminating food cravings.

From an Oriental medicine perspective, the acupuncture points, foods and herbs that are chosen to assist with weight loss directly influence the Qi of the Spleen and Liver systems to treat the root imbalances that are causing the weight gain.

From a Western perspective, acupuncture has been shown to have an effect on the function of the nervous system, endocrine system, digestive system, food cravings, and metabolism. All of which can help to energize the body, maximize the absorption of nutrients, regulate elimination, control overeating, suppress the appetite, and reduce anxiety.

The beauty of acupuncture is that each treatment is catered to the needs of the individual patient. Acupuncture points on the body will be chosen for overall well being with the objective of increasing circulation of the blood and Qi (stimulating the metabolism) and calming the nervous system.

Acupuncture is a powerful tool for healthy weight loss, by it self or as a supportive treatment in conjunction with other weight management programs.

Resolution: Quit Smoking

Acupuncture has turned a growing number of cigarette cravers into permanent ex-smokers. In fact, researchers say that acupuncture is a promising treatment for all types of addiction from cigarettes to heroin.

In one study, a team from Yale University successfully used auricular (ear) acupuncture to treat cocaine addiction. Results showed that 54.8% of participants tested free of cocaine during the last week of treatment, compared to 23.5% and 9.1% in the two control groups. Those who completed acupuncture treatment also had longer periods of sustained abstinence compared to participants in the control groups.

The acupuncture treatments for smoking cessation focus on jitters, cravings, irritability, and restlessness; symptoms that people commonly complain about when they quit. It also aids in relaxation and detoxification.

Call now to see how Acupuncture can help you with your New Year’s Resolutions!

Michelle Leonard: Acupuncture Treats Colds & Flu

With the change of season and cooler weather, many people will suffer with body aches, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, sneezing, fever, and fatigue. Clinical studies have shown that using Chinese medicine to prevent colds and flu can reduce the frequency of illness and severity of symptoms if you do get sick. TCM regulates the body’s innate healing energies and enhances the immune system. Wei qi ("way chee"), similar to the Western concept of the immune system, is the body's defensive energy, the barrier that protects us against viruses and bacteria. When wei qi is deficient, we become vulnerable to disease. We strengthen our wei qi when we get proper sleep, eat a healthy diet, and keep our stress levels down. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can also build up the supply of wei qi. This storehouse is the body’s way to effectively ward off disease. Chinese medicine is a natural, safe, and effective way to help support the body’s ability to defend itself! And if you do "catch a bug," TCM practitioners have acupuncture protocols to help you get back on your feet quickly. TCM teaches that our daily choices are the most important factors in our well-being. Essentials: Getting enough and restful sleep, relaxation and emotional balance, moderate physical activity, and good eating habits. TCM practitioners can help with many health conditions and assist you in establishing good self-care. Foods that are in season are the most beneficial for us. Autumn is the time to slowly roast foods at low temperatures. Avoid eating raw foods, and as always, stay away from fried, heavy foods and limit your consumption of dairy.

Enjoy Fall’s Bounty
whole grains, wild rice
leeks, garlic, sage, thyme,
rosemary, ginger, cinnamon
pears, apples, plums, figs,
pomegranate, persimmons
cabbage, broccoli, beets,
bok choy, brussels sprouts,
yams, carrots, winter squash

The following recipe is an ancient Chinese home remedy for colds. It works best when
you just begin to experience those symptoms that make you think you're getting sick. Chills or slight fever, itchy throat, stuffy nose, or a headache.

Miso Soup

6 cups water
3–4 tablespoons Aka Miso or red soybean paste
3–5 green onion stalks, chopped
In saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add miso and green onions.
Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Top with more
green onions and serve. You can add other ingredients to make
the soup heartier, such as fresh mushrooms, cooked shrimp, tofu,
or fresh gingerroot.

Feel free to pass this along to a loved one and friends.

Chiropractic Care for Fibromyalgia

Is the pain of fibromyalgia getting you down? Are you having trouble dealing with persistent backaches, leg cramps, and foot pain? If so, then chiropractic care may be just the thing for you. Chiropractic care is becoming increasingly popular among fibromyalgia sufferers because of the pain and stress relief that it offers. It can often provide relief in short periods of time and help you to get back to enjoying life fast. This article will outline the basics of chiropractic care and help you to decide if it could be an effective treatment for you.

Though often termed an alternative treatment, chiropractic care is now becoming more accepted by the mainstream medical community. Almost 20% of American men and women have used the services of a chiropractor at some point in their lives. 80% of those who use chiropractors report significant pain relief, better functioning, and an increased sense of wellbeing.

Chiropractic care is based on the theory that illness and pain are caused by misalignments in your skeletal structure. It sees the body as a connected system, which relies on your bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons to keep it functioning efficiently. When your skeletal structure is sound, your body should feel healthy and happy. But if parts of your skeleton are slightly off balance, it could cause serious problems, like chronic pain.

Chiropractors aim to solve pain and related symptoms by correcting the imbalances in your skeletal structure. Through a series of techniques, including stretches, adjustments, and manipulations, your chiropractor will restore your skeletal balance, thereby eliminating any pain symptoms.

Recently, fibromyalgia patients have been seeking chiropractic care increasingly often. Because fibromyalgia causes numerous tender points all over the body, many fibromyalgia patients suffer from back pain, neck pain, and leg cramps. In an attempt to solve these problems, many sufferers have looked to chiropractors. Because simple adjustments to the neck and spine can restore the carriage of the whole body, a lot of fibromyalgia sufferers find that alignments of the spine can significantly reduce pain all over their bodies.

Many fibromyalgia patients suffer from a condition called upper cervical spinal stenosis. This causes the coverings of the upper spine, known as meninges, to become compressed. This can cause severe, debilitating pain all over the body. Chiropractors can adjust the head and neck so the spine is no longer compressed, helping to relieve the widespread pain symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Numerous studies have been conducted analyzing the benefits of chiropractic care in fibromyalgia patients. A 1985 study asked 81 fibromyalgia patients to indicate drug or alternative treatments that best relieved their pain. Chiropractic care treatment scored surprisingly high in this study. Another study examined the effectiveness of spinal manipulation in relieving fibromyalgia symptoms. After just 15 treatments, fibromyalgia patients suffered from less pain and fatigue, and actually enjoyed better sleep quality.

Manipulations can provide numerous benefits including:

* better range of motion in your joints
* increased blood flow (which helps to release toxins and promote muscle healing)
* increased production of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers
* better pain tolerance

Choosing A Chiropractor can be very difficult. To find a chiropractor that is right for you, especially if you are suffering from fibromyalgia. Call Alternative Health Solutions of NJ.

How To Prepare For Your Reiki Session

There are several things that you can do to prepare for your Reiki session that will increase your comfort level, as well as the effectiveness of the healing session. The basic premise behind this is mindful awareness of the experience that you are about to have. Following these steps will also help your Reiki practitioner feel at ease and comfortable practicing with you.

To begin with, take a long relaxing shower the day of your treatment. The hot, cleansing water will help refresh and relax you, both mentally and physically. Avoid using any heavily scented products during or after your shower. Wearing strong scents could later prove detrimental, as the smell might distract you or your practitioner during the Reiki treatment.

Dress yourself in comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Avoid wearing tight clothing, as they lessen your chances of relaxing fully. Likewise, items such as short skirts should be avoided. Whenever possible, wear shoes that are easy to remove, and dress in layers so that you can be dressed appropriately for the room's temperature. Leave the jewelry at home on the day of your treatment- wedding bands are usually fine, but watches, bracelets and necklaces should be left someplace safe and out of the way. Some practitioners believe that jewelry can interfere with energy flow, while others merely find it to be in the way.

Be sure to arrive a few moments early for your appointment to avoid the stress of feeling late and being rushed. Be sure to communicate with your practitioner. Let them know what your preferences are (music, no music, dimmer lighting, etc) and alert them to any areas you would like them to work on. This communication is also important during a Reiki treatment. For example, if you started off your treatment very cold and were lying under a blanket, and later became very hot, it is far preferable that you simply let your practitioner know, rather than lying there under a blanket, sweating.

Each practitioner of Reiki is different, and may have their own specific guidelines for how they prefer their clients to prepare for a session. The above is merely a general guideline. Always follow the instructions of your practitioner.

Acupuncture and Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of chronic pain. It causes widespread pain and tenderness in the muscles and soft tissue (including tender points) as well as sleep problems, fatigue, and other symptoms.

Acupuncture has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It involves inserting needles in strategic parts of the body to improve the flow of what practitioners call chi, or vital energy said to travel through the body on energy pathways called meridians.

In recent decades, acupuncture has become more popular in the West, where it is also getting research attention for a number of conditions, including pain treatment.

Acupuncture Study-Martin's study included 50 fibromyalgia patients whose symptoms hadn't improved with other treatments.

Half of the patients got six acupuncture sessions over two or three weeks. The other patients got the same schedule of fake acupuncture treatments.

Those who got true acupuncture had notably bigger improvements in fibromyalgia symptoms than those who got fake acupuncture, write the researchers.

Results were based on questionnaires completed before the study, immediately after treatment, and one and seven months later. The largest benefit was seen one month after the treatments ended, the researchers note. They write that acupuncture was well tolerated, with minimal side effects.

In a Mayo Clinic news release, Martin says, "This study shows there is something real about acupuncture and its effects on fibromyalgia.

"We expected the acupuncture to improve the pain. We didn't really expect the largest benefit to be in fatigue or anxiety."

The lack of change in activity or physical function "doesn't surprise me, as we see this pattern in other chronic pain problems," Martin continues.

"You can relieve pain, but it's a lot harder to prompt activity changes. A chronically ill person needs more than symptom relief to resume a normal lifestyle. We're now beginning to work on that problem," he says.

Participants were moderately debilitated by fibromyalgia, according to the news release. "Many have given up work, a lot of recreational activities, and made adjustments in their lives," says Martin. "They have had a significant psychological burden as a result of the loss of these activities; it's become part of their identities."

Martin suggests that patients interested in acupuncture ask their doctors about it and find a qualified practitioner.

Holiday Laughter and Cheer is Healing

There is no better time to observe happiness and laughter than during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. The next time you are at the store, watch the children as they stroll by the Christmas cookies or the decoration aisle. They open up and smile with warmth and laughter. You should, too.

The holidays simply make you feel good; Christmas music piping over the speakers in stores, malls, and on the sidewalk cafes. The ringing of the charity bells outside storefronts with pots, baskets, and credit card machines for your loving donations. The sounds in your own home during the holidays are, well, just different - they are lighter and more joyous than on an average workday.

Belly laughs are echoes of happiness. It is easy to laugh when you feel good, but when the world appears dim, that is when we need laughter the most in our lives. Our laughter resonates through our hearts, filling the empty spaces with pure, unadulterated joy. We regain our footing in the moment and remember that no sorrow is powerful enough to rob us of our inborn happiness. When we understand that uninhibited laughter is the food of the soul, nourishing us from within, we know instinctively that life is worthwhile. The holidays bring us back to this point; we need to remember to keep this in our everyday lives.

As children, we laugh hundreds of times each day, delighted by the newness of life's experiences. When we reach adulthood, however, we tend to be preoccupied with responsibility and the stresses that life can bring. We forget to let go and let out a good belly laugh. Inviting laughter back into our lives is simply a matter of making the conscious decision to laugh. Though most of us laugh only when exposed to humor or the unexpected, each of us is capable of laughing at a mere passing thought.

A laugh that comes from the belly carries with it the same positive effects whether prompted by a funny joke or simply from a simple thought. When our laughter comes from the core of our being, it permeates every cell in our body, and then, we are not merely belly laughing but body laughing. We have resonated a higher vibration throughout our entire being, and THAT my friends, is healthy.

Laughter was part of human expression long before speech. Just look at a baby! Through laughter, we communicate, and laughter allows us to enjoy positive shared experiences with everyone, strangers and loved ones alike.

When I have a wonderful thought, I laugh out loud, even if I am alone. Laughter carries with it a wealth of benefits. An energetic and enthusiastic bout of body laughter exercises your muscles, the lungs, and your mind in equal measure and at the same time, leaving you feeling more relaxed and content. When we laugh at life's absurdity instead of responding angrily, our focus shifts. Anger, stress, guilt, sadness, fear, and depression no longer dominate us, and we are empowered to make light of what we originally feared. Laughter also opens our hearts, letting love and hope in. Laughter changes our perspective, and enables us to focus our attention on what is positive in our lives.

Gastrointestinal (GI) and Digestive Disorders

* Gluten Sensitive Enteropathy
* Celiac Disease
* Irritable Bowel Syndrome
* Ulcerative Colitis
* Crohn’s Disease
* Diverticulitis

A testimonial and explanation:

In 2001, I was diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune reaction to gluten of any kind. I had been having intestinal distress for only two months—ongoing diarrhea and abdominal pain—and thought I might have contracted giardiasis by drinking contaminated water from an open spring while on a camping trip, but tests proved positive for celiac. Prior to this I’d been able to eat anything and everything I wanted for my entire life; I’d never had digestive problems before. Although celiac is considered to be hereditary, no one in my family had a diagnosis of this condition.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine proved to be the key to my recovery from the symptoms associated with this condition. As a long-term practitioner of this ancient form of health care, I knew how effective Chinese medicine would be in restoring my body to health and balance. I sought regular treatments with a trusted acupuncture colleague, and within two months my intestinal symptoms had disappeared and I felt healthy again. I have maintained my health through ongoing acupuncture treatments and strict adherence to the gluten-free diet.

People with celiac disease are not able to eat wheat, rye, barley, spelt, or triticale, all of which contain gluten. The body reacts so strongly to gluten that it begins to destroy the lining of the small intestine, thereby causing malabsorption of nutrients. There are no medications that treat this condition; it is managed entirely by eliminating gluten from the diet. For some, though, even the gluten-free diet does not fully eliminate symptoms and they continue to struggle with bloating, gas, depression, fatigue, frequent canker sores, anemia, abdominal pain, dermatitis herpetiformis (a blistery, itchy skin disease), psoriasis, headaches, and other ailments. Celiac disease and even a non-celiac gluten sensitivity have been associated with a wide variety of conditions, including autism, chronic neurological disorders, epilepsy, infertility, insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes, autoimmune diseases, intestinal lymphoma or esophageal cancer, and schizophrenia.

In the process of healing myself I did a great deal of research about intestinal disorders in general, including irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, and others, from both Western and Eastern standpoints. For no apparent reason, I began getting patients in my practice who were diagnosed with one of these conditions, including some children, the majority of whom responded amazingly well to treatments. Many had been suffering for long periods of time with no relief; many were taking drugs that were not helping and had unpleasant and even debilitating side effects. Some were in despair—isolated, depressed, uncomfortable, in pain, in poor health. I estimate that 95 percent of those I’ve seen for treatment of gastrointestinal conditions have experienced significant improvement of their symptoms, and some report a resolution of all symptoms.
Acupuncture treatment

Because of my own experience with celiac disease I understand the physical and emotional implications of living with a gastrointestinal disorder. I know how hard it is to change one’s diet, to feel “different” in a social setting when food is involved, to deal with the anxiety of potential health complications or “episodes” at inopportune times. And, as both an acupuncturist and a patient of acupuncture, I know that there is relief to be found.

In Chinese medicine there are specific diagnoses for minutely specific symptoms, and each case is treated differently according to the “pattern” that presents. Each person with celiac disease—or Crohn’s, IBS, ulcerative colitis, or another intestinal disorder—gets treatments tailored to his or her own situation, based on many questions and a careful reading of tongue and pulse at each session. No two people are likely to get the same exact treatment, because there are so many factors to consider. We talk about diet, exercise, the emotional state, stressors, lifestyle, and anything else that comes to light as important to a person’s health and well-being. We brainstorm, collaborate, plan, set goals, talk about available resources, and work together to alleviate symptoms and stay on a path of healing.

With most gastrointestinal conditions of any kind, the function of the small intestine becomes impaired. It can take some time for health to return to the small intestine, even after changing dietary habits or taking suitable medication. Acupuncture works to support the body’s own existing healing mechanisms, getting at the root of a problem instead of masking symptoms, and restoring proper flow of Qi, blood, and bodily fluids. People report feeling better quickly, symptoms begin to abate, and life can return to normal.

Depression and Bipolar Symptoms

Acupuncture originated in China at least 2,000 years ago, and moved to the west in the 1970s as part of a greater awakening that included yoga, meditation, new diets, and other so-called alternative fare. At first, its availability was limited by the scarcity of practitioners, but now there are an estimated 20,000 certified acupuncturists in the US, and one third of these are medical doctors. According to FDA figures from 1993, Americans are making 9 to 12 million visits a year and spending as much as $500 million to have needles strategically placed along the invisible latitude and longitude lines of their skins.

To paraphrase from the National Institutes of Health:

There are more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the body connecting with 12 main and eight secondary pathways called meridians, which conduct energy - chi or qi - between the surface of the body and the internal organs.

According to the NIH:

"Qi regulates spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance. Qi is influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang. According to traditional Chinese medicine, when yin and yang are balanced, they work together with the natural flow of qi to help the body achieve and maintain health. Acupuncture is believed to balance yin and yang, keep the normal flow of energy unblocked, and restore health to the body and mind."

A western interpretation would be that the acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system, releasing chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain, promoting the body's natural healing abilities. In the words of the NIH: "Studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in a good way."

An NIH consensus panel of scientists, researchers, and practitioners in 1997 determined that acupuncture has been clinically proven to be effective against nausea from surgery and chemotherapy, addiction, headaches, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma, and to assist in stroke rehabilitation. Since then, other studies have looked at pain, ADHD, pregnancy complications, and other diseases and conditions.

In 1996, the FDA approved acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners. Needles are either new or sterilized. Relatively few complications have been reported to the FDA, but bad results can happen from improper sterilization of needles and improper treatment. The needles are hair thin and don't cause the kind of pain associated with hollow hypodermic needles.

In 1998, the NIH's Office of Alternative Medicine funded a study at the University of Arizona. Working with acupuncturist Rosa Schnyer, John Allen PhD devised a 16-week trial on 34 seriously depressed women. First the two worked up a standard treatment plan that targeted certain "depression points" on the body. Then they devised a dummy treatment calling for needles in nonspecific places. The acupuncturists administering the treatment had no idea whether they were using the real plan or the dummy plan.

Then the subjects were divided into three groups. The first group received the depression-specific acupuncture, the second group got the dummy treatment, and the third group was put on a wait list before being placed on eight weeks of the real thing.

Following the treatment, the depression-specific groups experienced a 43 percent reduction in their symptoms compared with a 22 percent reduction for the dummy group. More than half no longer met the criteria for clinical depression. Only five people dropped out of the study - two who moved away, one who became pregnant, and two who didn't like the needles. The dropout rate was much lower than for studies using medications.

Two advantages of acupuncture, Dr Allen told a seminar at the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association Conference in Boston, include no language barrier (a factor for patients who have difficulty speaking English), and its low cost compared to conventional treatment.

Story to share: On the advice of Dr Chen, her acupuncturist, Karen did not quit her medication. She began the treatment in May - never going more than once a week - and gradually, she says, she began to recover. "For a few days I felt a little better," she recounts, "then after that I felt bad days. But the better days got better oh so gradually and the bad days less bad."

Karen would lie on a table as Dr Chen put some needles into her ear, arm, and leg - always on the right side (except for a few needles in the other leg). One time he put the needles in similar areas on the left side. He would also point a heat lamp where he left needles in the leg. The needles prick, according to Karen, "just the littlest bit." Then she would remain on the table while Dr Chen left the room for 20 minutes. Finally, Dr Chen would take out the needles and rub some areas of the back and neck.

Karen thinks the first few visits were critical, but her follow-up visits were important, too.

In July, Karen switched to St John's wort before slowly reducing her Paxil in August (she is now down to 10 mg). According to Karen: "I believe both acupuncture and St John's wort have helped me. I think the acupuncture enabled the Saint John's wort to work more effectively. I like the idea of making the body work its best with acupuncture."

She goes on to say: "I have always had to take higher doses of any antidepressant in order to get the best results. Why not get my immune system working better so that I might not need such a high dose or, even better, take St John's wort instead with minimal side effects?"

Dr Chen, says Karen, works on the principle that it's all about helping the body's immune system function in an optimal way so that it keeps the disease in check, resulting in fewer bad symptoms. In Karen's words:

"The body takes time to heal and the acupuncture guides the body to heal itself. Heal from what? I don't think our bodies are working optimally. The body does its best under any circumstances but after years of medications, ravages of depression and stress, excesses in food and drink - sugar, chemicals, smog - acupuncture helps the body recover from these assaults. I have more respect for the working of the body now and the strength of it."

Now, after four and a half months, Karen feels ready to discontinue treatment. As well as easing her depression, she also credits acupuncture for helping her go off sugar.

Managing Menopause with Acupuncture

Are you sick and tired of hot flashes?
Are you struggling with insomnia, anxiety or depression?
Are you worried about being on hormone replacement therapy?
Are you looking for a natural solution to managing menopause?

Menopause should be a time of wisdom and reflection, however if you suffer debilitating menopausal symptoms this may not seem possible. Hot flashes interfere with daily activities and often affect your sleep. This can lead to feelings of irritability, fatigue and depression.

You may be considering hormone replacement therapy to control these symptoms but drugs merely suppress the symptoms and may have unhealthy or unpleasant side effects.

Natural alternative methods are available to you…

Traditional Chinese medicine, Acupuncture, has been treating the symptoms of menopause for over two thousand years. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the undesirable symptoms of menopause such as insomnia, anxiety, night sweats, and hot flashes, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, fatigue, and weight gain are all signals that your body is out of balance. Acupuncture, dietary, and lifestyle suggestions are made in order to bring the body back into balance and relieve the negative symptoms of menopause.

Acupuncture stimulates the healing process and improves overall health.

Acupuncture has been proven to have an effect on the hypothalamus pituitary ovarian axis which effects hormonal balance in the body.

A medical study at the University of Pittsburgh has found that acupuncture can decrease hot flashes by 35% and decrease insomnia by 50%

Acupuncture is endorsed by the World health Organization as an effective treatment for menopausal symptoms

Traditional Chinese medicine can help with

* hot flashes
* night sweats
* insomnia -irritability
* anxiety/palpitations
* depression
* fatigue
* weight gain
* loss of libido
* vaginal dryness
* memory loss
* headaches

By combining acupuncture treatments, a healthy diet and positive lifestyle choices you can get relief from unpleasant menopausal symptoms. In addition, this will lead to positive lifelong changes regarding your overall health.

Eighteen Reasons Why You Should NOT Vaccinate Your Children Against The Flu This Season

This year it is more important that you protect your children and loved ones from the flu vaccines than influenza itself. Here are the reasons:

1. This flu is simply another flu. It is not unusually deadly. In fact, the H1N1 swine flu in circulation is less deadly than many other influenza outbreaks. The first 1000 confirmed swine flu cases in Japan and China produced zero deaths. The Centers for Disease Control alleges 36,000 Americans succumb to the flu each year, but so far, since March through August of 2009 (6 months), the swine flu has been attributed to ~500–600 deaths in the US. The swine flu of 2009 has already swept through the Southern Hemisphere’s flu season without alarm. Only exaggerated reports have been issued by the World Health Organization regarding hospitalizations required during the flu season in South American countries. Getting exposed to influenza and developing natural antibodies confers resistance for future flu outbreaks. Artificially boosting antibodies by exposure to flu viruses in vaccines is more problematic than natural exposure. Americans have been exposed to the H1N1 swine flu throughout the summer of 2009 with far fewer deaths and hospitalizations than commonly attributed to the seasonal flu.

2. Health authorities tacitly admit prior flu vaccination programs were of worthless value. This is the first time both season and pandemic flu vaccines will be administered. Both seasonal flu and swine flu vaccines will require two inoculations. This is because single inoculations have failed to produce sufficient antibodies. Very young children and older frail adults, the high-risk groups in the population, may not produce sufficient antibodies in response to the flu vaccine. This is an admission that prior flu vaccines were virtually useless. The same people who brought you the ineffective vaccines in past years are bringing you this year’s new vaccines. Can you trust them this time?

3. In addition to failure to produce sufficient antibodies, this swine flu vaccine is brought to you by the same people who haven’t been able to adequately produce a seasonal flu vaccine that matches the flu strain in circulation. In recent years flu vaccination has been totally worthless because the strains of the flu in circulation did not match the strain of the virus in the vaccines. Authorities claim the prevalent flu strain in circulation in mid-September ’09 is the H1N1 swine flu, which appears to be milder than past seasonal influenza in circulation. If this data is correct, why receive the season flu shot this year?

4. The vaccines will be produced by no less than four different manufacturers, possibly with different additives (called adjuvants) and manufacturing methods. The two flu inoculations may be derived from a multi-dose vial and in a crisis, and in short supply, it will be diluted to provide more doses and then adjuvants must be added to trigger a stronger immune response. Adjuvants are added to vaccines to boost production of antibodies but may trigger autoimmune reactions. Some adjuvants are mercury (thimerosal), aluminum and squalene. Would you permit your children to be injected with lead? Lead is very harmful to the brain. Then why would you sign a consent form for your kids to be injected with mercury, which is even more brain-toxic than lead? Injecting mercury may fry the brains of American kids.

5. This is the first year mock vaccines have been used to gain FDA approval. Mock vaccines are made to gain approval of the manufacturing method and then the prevalent virus strain in circulation is added just days before it is actually placed into use. Don’t subject your children to experimental vaccines. Yes, these vaccines have been tested on healthy kids and adults, but they are not the same vaccines your children will be given. Those children with asthma, allergies, type I diabetes, etc. are at greater risk for side effects. Children below the age of 2 years do not have a sufficient blood–brain barrier developed and are subject to chronic brain infections that emanate into symptoms that are called autism. Toddlers should not be subjected to injected viruses.

6. Over-vaccination is a common practice now in America. American children are subjected to 29 vaccines by the age of two. This means a little bit of disease is being injected into young children continually during their most formative years! Veterinarians have backed off of repeat vaccination in dogs because of observed side effects.

7. Health officials want to vaccinate women during pregnancy, subjecting the fetal brain to an intentional biological assault. A recent study showed exposure flu viruses among women during pregnancy provoke a similar gene expression pattern in the fetus as that seen in autistic children. This is a tacit admission that vaccines, which inject a little bit of influenza into humans, causes autism.

8. Modern medicine has no explanation for autism, despite its continued rise in prevalence. Yet autism is not reported among Amish children who go unvaccinated. Beware the falsehoods of modern medicine.

9. School kids are likely to receive nasally-administered vaccines (Flu-Mist) that require no needle injection. But this form of live vaccine produces viral shedding which will surely be transmitted to family members. What a way to start an epidemic!

10. This triple reassortment virus appears to be man made. The H1N1 swine flu virus of 2009 coincidentally appeared in Mexico on the same week that President Nicolas Sarkozy of France visited Mexican president Felipe Calderon, to announce that France intends to build a multi-million dollar vaccine plant in Mexico. An article written by Ron Maloney of the Seguin, Texas Gazette-Enterprise newspaper announces a "rehearsal for a pandemic disaster" scheduled for May 2, 2009. The article says: "Guadalupe County emergency management and their counterparts around the country are preparing for just such a scenario…" This means county health authorities across the U.S. had been preparing a rehearsal for mass vaccinations prior to the announced outbreak in Mexico. Virologists admit this part swine flu/part avian flu/part human flu virus must have taken time to develop. But it somehow wasn’t detected by hundreds of flu monitoring stations across the globe. On April 24, 2009 Dr. John Carlo, Dallas County Medical Director, alludes that the H1N1 strain of the Swine flu as possibly being engineered in a laboratory. He says: "This strain of swine influenza that’s been cultured in a laboratory is something that’s not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza that’s been identified." (Globe & Mail, Canada)

11. Recall the swine flu scare of 1976. In a politically charged atmosphere where Gerald Ford was seeking election to the Presidency, the swine flu suddenly appeared at a military base. Vaccine was produced and millions of Americans were vaccinated. But the vaccine was worse than the disease, causing hundreds of cases of Guillain Barre syndrome and a few deaths. In a replay of the past, the White House is directly involved in promoting the H1N1 2009 swine flu vaccine. The federal government will use federal funds to pay off schools to administer vaccines, promote vaccination via highway billboards and TV advertisements, and conduct military-style mass inoculations in such rapid fashion that if side effects occur, it will be too late. The masses will have been vaccinated already. Over $9 billion has been allotted by the federal government to develop and deliver an unproven and experimental flu vaccine. Don’t be a guinea pig for the government.

12. Researchers are warning that over-use of the flu vaccine and anti-flu drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza can apply genetic pressure on flu viruses and then they are more likely to mutate into a more deadly strain. US health authorities want 70% of the public to be vaccinated against the flu this ’09 season, which is more than double the vaccination percentage of any prior flu season. This would certainly apply greater genetic pressure for the flu to mutate into a more virulent strain.

13. Most seasonal influenza A (H1N1) virus strains tested from the United States and other countries are now resistant to Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Tamiflu has become a nearly worthless drug against seasonal flu. According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control, among 1148 seasonal flu samples tested, 1143 (99.6%) were resistant to Tamiflu!

14. As the flu season progresses the federal government may coerce or mandate Americans to undergo vaccination. France has already ordered enough vaccine to inoculate their entire population and has announced that vaccination will be mandatory. The US appears to be waiting to announce mandatory vaccination at a later date when it can scare the public into consenting to the vaccine. The federal government is reported to be hiring people to visit homes of unvaccinated children. This sounds like the Biblical account of Pharaoh attempting to eradicate all the young Israelite baby boys. Must we hide our babies now?

15. Public health authorities have cried wolf every flu season to get the public to line up for flu shots. Health authorities repeatedly publish the bogus 36,000 annual flu-related deaths figure to scare the public into getting flu shots. But that figure is based on the combined deaths from pneumonia in the elderly and the flu. Maybe just 5000–6000 or so flu-related deaths occur annually, mostly among individuals with compromised immune systems, the hospitalized, individuals with autoimmune disease or other health problems. As stated above, the swine flu in full force has only resulted in ~500–600 deaths in the first six months in circulation and it is far more dreaded by public health authorities than the seasonal flu. The Centers for Disease Control issues a purchase order for flu vaccines and then serves as the public relations agency to get the public to pay for the vaccines. Out of a population of 325 million Americans, only 100 million doses of flu vaccine have been administered each year and no epidemic has erupted among the unvaccinated.

16. The news media is irresponsible in stirring up unfounded fear over this coming flu season. Just exactly how ethical is it for newspapers to publish reports that a person has died of the swine flu when supposedly thousands die of the flu annually? In the past the news media hasn’t chosen to publicize each and every flu-related death, but this time it has chosen to frighten the public. Why? Examine the chart below. The chart shows that the late flu season of 2009 peaked in week 23 (early June) and has dissipated considerably. According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control, for week 34 ending August 29, 2009, there were 236 hospitalizations and 37 deaths related to the flu. That would represent just 5 hospitalizations and less than one death per State, which is "below the epidemic threshold."

17. Public health officials are irresponsible in their omission of any ways to strengthen immunity against the flu. No options outside of problematic vaccines and anti-flu drugs are offered, despite the fact there is strong evidence that vitamins C and D activate the immune system and the trace mineral selenium prevents the worst form of the disease where the lungs fill up with fluid and literally drown a flu-infected person. The only plausible explanation as to why the flu season typically peaks in winter months is a deficiency of sunlight-produced vitamin D. Protect your family. Arm your immune system with vitamins and trace minerals.

18. Will we ever learn if the flu vaccine this year is deadly in itself? In 1993 the federal government hid a deadly flu vaccine that killed thousands of nursing home patients. It was the first year that flu shots were paid for by Medicare. The vaccine-related mortality was so large that this set back the life expectancy of Americans for the first time since the 1918 Spanish flu! Mortality reports take a year or two to tabulate and the federal government may choose not to reveal the true mortality rate and whether it was related to the flu or the vaccines. You say this couldn’t happen? It did in 1993!

Acupuncture Provides Headache Relief

For chronic headaches the best treatment may be one of the oldest: acupuncture.In 1998, the National Institutes of Health accepted acupuncture as a useful alternative treatment for headaches, but warned that there were not enough clinical trials to draw firm conclusions about its efficacy. Now a systematic review of studies through 2007 concludes that acupuncture provides greater relief than either medication or a placebo.

The report, which appears in the December issue of Anesthesia and Analgesia, reviewed 25 randomized controlled trials in adults that lasted more than four weeks. In seven trials comparing acupuncture with medication, researchers found that 62 percent of 479 patients had significant response to acupuncture, and only 45 percent to medicine.

Fourteen of the studies, with a total of 961 patients, compared acupuncture with a placebo, a treatment in which patients were led to believe they were getting acupuncture. Of these, 53 percent found some pain relief with acupuncture, compared with 45 percent who felt better with the placebo. In four studies comparing acupuncture with massage, the massage worked better than acupuncture, but those studies were too small to draw statistically significant conclusions.

“People who get acupuncture prefer it to medication, because of the potential side effects of drugs,” said Dr. Tong J. Gan, a co-author of the review and a professor of anesthesiology at Duke. “This is an alternative treatment that is starting to move into the mainstream.”

A version of this article appeared in print on December 16, 2008, on page D6 of the New York edition of the New York Times

Bella Belly Bump Helpful Information Newsletter Share (8/ 5/09) Alternative Health Solutions of NJ

One of the luxuries of modern living is that it's easy to buy convenience foods that taste good — it's just too bad they're full of preservatives and other ingredients you should steer clear of during pregnancy. But there are "fast" foods that are genuinely good for you, especially if what you really need are light meals or snacks that will tide you over until your next meal.

Healthy fast foods
1. Single-serve fruit bowls. Handy little 4-ounce fruit cups that count as a serving of the daily recommendation for fruits and vegetables. Choose varieties packed in their own juice rather than in sugary syrup.

2. Soy milk. Available in 8-ounce servings of plain, chocolate, and vanilla flavor. Stash one in your purse or briefcase (they don't need to be refrigerated). One bottle can supply one-third of your daily calcium and vitamin D needs during pregnancy.

3. Raisins. A 1-ounce box provides 2 grams of fiber, 4 percent of the daily recommended amount of iron, and even 1 gram of protein.

4. Yogurt. The classic nutritious-and-convenient food can provide you with 25 percent of your daily calcium requirement, protein, fiber, and several other necessary vitamins and minerals.

5. Easy-to-make trail mix. Mix a handful of shredded wheat-type cereal with a handful of dried cherries and almonds. Keep a zip-lock bag full in your desk or car for a handy, crunchy snack.

6. Salad bar. Some fast-food restaurants and many grocery stores have salad bars where you can serve yourself practically the whole day's worth of fruits and vegetables. Load up on spinach, carrots, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, zucchini, raisins, and nuts. Add chickpeas and kidney beans for a protein boost.

7. Baby carrots. Carrots are full of vitamin A and fiber and you can find them in single-serving bags. Dip them in nonfat yogurt mixed with a little bit of ranch dressing for an extra dose of nutrition. Look for other pre washed and pre packed veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach, and stir-fry them together for dinner.

8. String cheese. If you don't know about string cheese now, just wait until your baby is a toddler — this food will become a snack staple. Low-fat mozzarella sticks are chock-full of calcium and have some protein.

9. Boxed, calcium-fortified orange juice (now available in many grocery stores). A 4-ounce serving provides half the daily requirement of vitamin C and about 15 percent of your calcium needs.

10. Single-serve boxes of cereal (not the sugar-coated kind) or packages of instant oatmeal. Stash a few in your desk at work for a snack. Almost all breakfast cereal is now fortified with essential vitamins and minerals.

11. Single-serve cottage cheese bowls (available in the dairy section of most grocery stores). Cottage cheese is a good source of protein and calcium.

Foods to avoid
1. Ramen noodles. Packed with salt, fat, and little else.

2. Sodas. Fill up on empty calories and sugar and you won't have any room for more nutritious drinks. Low-fat milk, carbonated water, and juices are a good substitute.

3. Prepackaged commercial lunches. Sure, they'd be a quick fix for hunger pangs, but preservatives, salt, and fat make them a bad choice.

4. Almost all prepared, frozen meals. They tend to have astronomical amounts of salt and fat. Instead, pop a potato in the microwave, and top it with cheese and steamed broccoli for a fast, healthy meal. If you can't avoid the occasional frozen meal, look for organic brands, or those low in salt and fat.

5. Iceberg lettuce. If you're going to eat a salad, choose a green such as romaine that's full of fiber; A, B, and C vitamins; folic acid; calcium; and potassium. Iceberg lettuce has only trace amounts of these nutrients.

Pregnancy Summer Smoothies

Double-Berry Smoothie

By making smoothies from scratch -- and avoiding the store-bought varieties -- you can cut way back on the sugar content.

Ingredients
1/4 cup orange juice
1 cup vanilla or plain low-fat yogurt
1 ripe banana, peeled and broken into pieces
1/4 cup blueberries, fresh
1/4 cup blackberries, fresh

Place all the ingredients in a blender. Puree on high speed until uniform in texture and very smooth. Serve immediately.

Kale Banana Smoothie Recipe

Sounds odd but it's oh so good and good for you!

Kale is a dark leafy green that’s an amazing source of nutrients including vitamin A, vitamin E, B vitamins, iron, protein, calcium and vitamin C.

One banana is a good source of vitamin A; a source of vitamins B6 and C, and copper; contains 0.3g of fat, of which 33% is saturated; provides 3g of dietary fibre; supplies 86kcal (360kJ). The sodium content is low.

Put 1 banana, 2 cups chopped kale, 1 tsp maple syrup, 1-2 tbsp flaxseeds and 1/2 cup brown rice milk into a blender and blend! (I like to add a few ice cubes for summertime refreshment).

It will take a few minutes for everything to puree so be patient. It ends up being a lovely vibrant green color - very fresh and uplifting!

Chiropractic and Spinal Research; Ear Infections

A dramatic case of chiropractic’s effect on the immune system is that of a 26-
month-old male child with a history of 19 ear infections (treated by antibiotics).
The child was diagnosed with Kostmann syndrome, a near complete inability to
manufacture neutrophils, a white blood cell necessary for immunity. He had a
neutrophil count of less than 500.

The child began spinal adjustments (4 the first six days, 2 in the next 5 days).
Child was then seen 1-2 times per month. By the 3rd day there was a 50-60%
reduction in neck lymphatic swelling and 20-30% reduction in auricular and
clavicular lymph node swelling. By day 11 both ears were normal. The
neutrophil count improved to 19,000 with no ear infections for 14 months after
chiropractic.

Flu shot Tid Bits By Alternative Health Solutions of NJ

“Got asthma – better get a flu shot” is what medical doctors have been telling patients. However, more recent research reveals that just the opposite may be true: giving an asthmatic a flu shot doesn’t protect him/her from attacks but instead makes their condition worse. Researchers took 800 asthmatic children and were placed into two groups of 400 each. One group got the flu shot, the other didn’t. Researchers were
surprised to find that the children in the vaccinated group were nearly twice as likely to visit the ER because of their asthma.

&

According to Dr. Hugh Fudenberg, the world’s leading immunogeneticist, if an individual has had 5 consecutive flu shots, his/her chance of developing Alzheimer's Disease is 10 times greater than if they had one, two or no shots. When asked why, ...Dr. Fudenberg replied that the mercury and aluminum in flu vaccines (also in many childhood vaccines) build up in the brain causing damage.

Chiropractic Football

With football teams clashing it out on the field chiropractors are not far behind. There is significant chiropractic participation in US professional football. In a survey, 77% of National Football League (NFL) trainers reported referring a player to a chiropractor, with 45% of the NFL trainers reporting that they themselves had seen a chiropractor. In addition 31% of NFL teams have a chiropractor officially on staff, and an additional 12% of teams refer players to chiropractors.

If you play football or any sport, you’ll find that chiropractic spinal care will help your speed, coordination and reaction time. In one study athletes under chiropractic care had an 18%faster reaction time than controls.

Sometimes the difference between winning
and losing can be hundredths of a second. With that in mind, chiropractic might make the difference between first places and everything else. Get the winning edge – get a chiropractic check-up, especially before any competition.

According to Dr. Hugh Fudenberg, the world’s leading immunogeneticist, if an individual has had 5 consecutive flu shots, his/her chance of developing Alzheimer's Disease is 10 times greater than if they had one, two or no shots.
